Tyop du jour
"Once clit, the candle leaked smoke and lily-scents into the warm afternoon air."

I... thanks, brain.

(Well, it made me laugh.)

The ideas, multiplying in my head
On Friday my third story for The Daily Cabal went up: New Year's Wishes. It was inspired by hearing that for New Year's this year, people could text or email in their wishes to be written on confetti that would be scattered over Times Square.

It takes place in a world that I've also written a 4,000-word short story in. I finished editing it today and sent it to ever-wonderful betas (it was the source of my tyop du jour) and hopefully it will not need too much more work before I can start submitting it. Considering how easily the short story and "New Year's Wishes" flowed out, I suspect I will be returning to this world and, possibly, these characters again in the future.

(I have also noticed a current trend of writing about spices.)

My second story for The Daily Cabal went up back before Christmas: Bear. This one's going to be lengthened into a short story when I can figure out how to tell it in a more linear way.

(Remember, there's a feed -- [info]the_daily_cabal -- if you want the little stories to appear on your flist every weekday morning.)

does it matter if we're all matter when we're done, when the sky is full of zeroes and ones?
I only have writing on the space opera book dating back to 2002 on my computer. I think I recently threw out the print-out of some slightly older stuff, for some unfathomable reason.

I started this thing in 1997. That means I have five years worth of work that's gone. Deleted. On hard drives and floppy disks long since thrown away.

Oh, I'm sure it's atrocious. But I wish I had it, nonetheless.

Flicking through what I do still have on my hard drive (transferred from at least two computers ago), I'm saddened by the knowledge of how many aborted attempts at drafts I've lost. How many plot changes I've lost. I have things that I started at about the same time, but I know that's long, long after I did such-and-such plot thing with the space opera book. I still remember a lot of the plots, but that's not the same as having them.

I would like to go back in time and tell younger-me to stop deleting those older versions.

Masterfade
You took my hand and led me down to watch a papillon parade, and
we let the kittens lick our hair and drink our chalky lemonade.
You squeezed my hand and told me softly that I shouldn't be afraid
'cause all the while your finger's resting gently on the masterfade,
the masterfade.
